Porter Creek sits along the Alaska Highway about 8 km north of downtown Whitehorse. It's a residential neighbourhood built around Mountainview Drive and Wann Road, with a Superstore, a liquor store, and a strip of gas stations. There's nothing charming about it — it's where people live because the houses are cheaper than downtown. The Yukon River is a short drive west, and the Takhini River trails are 15 minutes north.

For visitors, Porter Creek is only worth considering if you’re on a budget, driving anyway, and heading north toward Dawson or Kluane. You’ll save $30-50 a night versus downtown but spend it on gas driving into town for dinner. At 9pm there is nothing open here except the gas stations. Skip if this is your first Yukon trip. Consider it if you’re a returning visitor who just wants a bed and a parking spot before hitting the Dempster.

Where to stay

The handful of B&Bs and small guesthouses cluster around Mountainview Drive and the older streets off Wann Road. Expect $95-140 year-round. There are also cabin rentals along the Takhini River side that go for $130-180 and give you actual wilderness feel without leaving city limits. Avoid anything on the Alaska Highway itself — you’ll hear semi-trucks all night. Look for places on the residential grid west of the highway.

Getting there

Whitehorse Transit routes #1 and #2 connect Porter Creek to downtown weekdays with buses every 30-45 minutes, taking about 20 minutes. Fare $2.50. No evening or Sunday service. The airport is 6 km south — cab is about $18. In practice, everyone here has a car; the Alaska Highway is the spine and you drive on it constantly.
