Carcross — short for Caribou Crossing — is a village of about 300 people wedged between Bennett Lake and Nares Lake, an hour and change south of Whitehorse on the South Klondike Highway. It punches far above its weight for scenery: the Carcross Desert (technically the world's smallest desert, though geologists will argue), the Montana Mountain range rising straight from the water, and the White Pass & Yukon Route railway that still runs seasonally to Skagway.

The redeveloped Carcross Commons is a cluster of Tlingit-carved buildings with a coffee shop, a bakery, a general store, and the Matthew Watson General Store (oldest operating store in Yukon). It's charming for a few hours; two nights is enough unless you’re mountain biking Montana Mountain, which has some of the best purpose-built singletrack in northern Canada. Skip in shoulder season — most services close October to May.

Where to stay

The Caribou Hotel on Bennett Avenue is the historic centrepiece, recently renovated, $180-260 a night. There are a couple of B&Bs and lodges scattered on the lakeshore and along the Tagish Road. In summer everything books solid two months ahead; in winter half of them close. Expect $145-220 in summer, less shoulder season. Avoid staying more than 10 minutes' drive from the village unless you want to eat every dinner in your cabin.

Getting there

You drive to Carcross from Whitehorse on the South Klondike Highway (Highway 2) — a scenic 75 km, about 1 hour, plowed year-round. Watch for wildlife at dawn and dusk. No public transit. In summer, Yukon Alaska Tourist Tours runs day-tours from Whitehorse. Within Carcross itself everything is walkable in five minutes. The White Pass railway runs summer only and is a tourist experience, not practical transport.

Is Carcross worth an overnight?

Yes if you’re mountain biking, riding the White Pass railway, or want a quiet lakeside stop between Whitehorse and Skagway. As a daytrip from Whitehorse it also works fine — three hours in the village plus the desert plus the drive is a full day.

Does anything stay open in Carcross in winter?

The Matthew Watson General Store, the Caribou Hotel, and one or two lodges. Carcross Commons partially shuts down October to April. If you’re coming in winter, phone ahead to confirm accommodation and eat in Whitehorse before you drive.
