Book Beez Kneez Bakpakers on Hanson Street — dorm beds from $38, private rooms $95. It is the only real hostel in town and fills up in July, so lock in early. Skip the rental car and use Whitehorse Transit (route 1 or 2, $2.50 flat). For the Wildlife Preserve, share a taxi with hostel-mates — about $60 each way split three ways. Groceries at Real Canadian Superstore on 4th Ave save you 40% versus eating out for every meal.

Day 1: Free downtown

Walk the Millennium Trail loop along both sides of the Yukon River, 5 km and free. Visit the MacBride Museum on 1st Ave — $15 but the outdoor gold-panning courtyard is free. Free tour of the SS Klondike grounds. Lunch at Burnt Toast Cafe on Main St, sandwiches $12. Free fish ladder viewing from July to August. Dinner: grocery-store rotisserie chicken plus a Yukon Gold beer at the hostel — under $15 total and honestly not tragic.

Day 2: Miles Canyon on foot

Take Whitehorse Transit route 5 to the end, then walk 30 minutes to Miles Canyon Suspension Bridge. Free trails go 8 km round trip to Canyon City ruins. Bring a picnic from Baked Cafe (sandwich $11). Back in town by 4pm for the free walking tour from the Visitor Info Centre on 2nd Ave, daily at 5pm in summer. Dinner at Sanchez Cantina on Steele St, tacos 3 for $16. Evening drink at Dirty Northern Public House, pints $7.

Day 3: Takhini splurge

Yukon Alpine Adventures runs a shuttle to Takhini Hot Springs for $30 return, and the soak itself is $16. Bring a towel from the hostel. Back in Whitehorse by 4pm to walk Grey Mountain trailhead — free, and the view over town at sunset is the best photo of the trip. Farewell dinner at Klondike Rib and Salmon happy hour (4pm to 6pm) for bison chili at $14. Total for 3 days excluding flight and hostel: around $220.
