Summer: mid-June to mid-August

This is peak season for good reason. Whitehorse gets 19 hours of daylight around solstice; Dawson gets 21. Highs sit 20°C to 25°C, occasional heat spikes to 30°C. Every trail, ferry, and interpretive centre is open. Downside: hotel prices peak, mosquitoes are aggressive in June (bring DEET), and campgrounds fill Thursday to Sunday. Book everything by early May. Dawson Music Festival runs late July and doubles hotel demand for that specific weekend.

Aurora season: late August to early April

Northern lights are technically visible whenever it is dark and clear, but the sweet spots are late August to mid-October (mild temps, some fall colour) and mid-February to late March (long clear nights, stable roads). Winter aurora tours from Whitehorse cost $130 to $180 per person. Deep winter (December to January) has short days and temperatures that dip to minus 40°C — for hardy visitors only. Book aurora tours 2 to 3 nights to buffer against cloud.

Shoulder: May and September

May is technically spring but muddy; most trails are unusable until late May. Hotel prices are 25% below summer, restaurants are open, and 16 hours of daylight returns by late May. September through mid-month has fall colour (tundra red in Tombstone, aspen gold everywhere else), aurora chances, no mosquitoes, and daytime highs of 10°C to 15°C. This is the smart traveller's window. October gets snow and many seasonal businesses close.

What to skip

Avoid late April and early November — freeze-thaw creates ice, many operators are closed for changeover, and the landscape looks bleak. December has minus 30°C temperatures and 5 hours of dim daylight in Whitehorse (worse in Dawson). Only visit December if you specifically want extreme conditions and Christmas markets. The Whitehorse Fireweed Market and most restaurants adjust hours seasonally — check individual websites before travelling in November or April.
