The village itself
Haines Junction sits at the intersection of the Alaska and Haines highways, 160 km west of Whitehorse. The town is essentially one intersection, but it packs Da Kų Cultural Centre (excellent free exhibits on Southern Tutchone culture), the Kluane National Park visitor centre, and the Village Bakery — the best baked goods for 400 km in any direction. Two hours here covers the town; the reason to stay is the park at the edge.
Using Haines Junction as a base
Day-trip options from your hotel: the King's Throne trail (10 km return, moderate) from Kathleen Lake for jaw-dropping Kluane views; the drive to Kluane Lake and Soldier's Summit; a flightseeing tour over Mount Logan and the Kaskawulsh Glacier ($350-450 per person, Rocking Star or Icefield Discovery). Stay at the Raven Hotel or Parkside Inn. Restaurants close early — Frosty Freeze is the only place open past 9 pm, and it's a burger stand.
